Retirements: After this game Jaran Pantic's boots will be hung in the laundry never to be cleaned again
What can we say? Beaten on the day in a most uninteresting game of footy made confusing by some decision inconsistency?  Esam exudes class? That's twice we have succumbed to UQ in the final round at their dung heap.
None-the-less thanks to coaches and players for the season. Some exhilarating and depressiing moments. Silly Sunday will be some sort of relief although our preference would be for a new season to kick-off now, something like the old night series at the lake Oval for sides not contesting the finals.
Season stats will be on show as soon as we can collect and collate.

This game while not pretty, illustrated a tenacity not often seen in the ranks of a senior competition. Lobby and his cohort have struggled to field sides all season - at times there have been feeble excuses - and yet we have not once yielded to a walkover. The team yesterday exemplified this spirit with blokes pulling on the jumper just because we are Broadbeach. Club volunteers Travis Johnson, Nathan Hobley, Tim Searl, Lobby and Scotty were joined by Taylor Haley, Moshie-Thomas, Pierce Fitzgerald, Grenato Braden?? (someone's mate), Woofa and Peter Kerr, father of Harry.  Peter drives from the Sunshine coast each week to watch Harry play in the ones, and he is not exactly in his prime having celebrated his 35th birthday for the last 25 years.  Many thanks to these and others, numbering over the ton, in their efforts to avoid besmirching the club. With one proviso: Tim Searl's kick out from full back!  Should also relate that everyone was on board, even BA had a waterboy shirt on!  Well done all.

Well in front at the halfway mark, the Darkside had to bring their A game to knock over a determined Broadie with a weakened bench in the last stanza. They were able to rotate their midfielders through the midfield while we plugged injury gaps.
No player ever gave up and Coach Mayo was extremely proud of the performance on the day and throughout the season, particularly in the context of scratching for sides on the Friday nights. Great season lads.  And well done to Mayo and Steve Littlechild.

SENIORS ROUND 17

Senior Squad (Yet to be announced):

Debut: Kai Sheers. Could be the odd family member watching this one. Kai has had an injury interupted season impacting on his state and club appearances. Still a Colts player, his state appearance has disqualified him from playing in the Colts elimination final.

Ah, the highs and lows of footy. One week we fix up the competition leaders and then we crash against the mob we beat up 20 years ago. The blokes suffered on the deck and were morosely introspective post game. Time enough to fix it right.
Labrador broke their drought of wins at Ord Minnet since 2010 and quite likely inflicted our worst defeat ever.
We didn't bother the scoreboard attendents too often and our first major was at the 26th minute of the second stanza with the next (and last) about a quarter later.
The Tiges were good with Clarke all over the place and Todd Featherstone playing his 200th like his first.

First up, thanks to the blokes who filled out the side. Those who had run around in the Colts, those who gave up work and those who had not played the game before. Lobby faces a different group each week - it's a wonder he remembers the names!
A word about player Boakye (we don't know how to spell his first name). From Rocky - the same club as the Chadwicks - and is on the coast at the SUNs academy. Can play. Willing to contest the nut in the air and on the deck; has a classic left foot; and has a turn of pace. Let's hope he is still around Broadie when the dust is settled.

Great win. Nothing much separating the sides for the first three quarters. Mayo called it at the last break: we would run 'em off their feet. A nervous period of 10 minutes when we had all the play but could only add 2 goals 7 behinds, fortunately they didn't get near it. Eventually it was a calm victory with the lads finishing strongly. Loved the Jack O'Shea pack mark and goal in the first; the Chandler Rolfe tackle in the third; O'Reilly's inspirational spoil in the third; and Wallace's liveliness all day. And Matt Smith is a ball magnet!
Roll on Southport, your time in daylight is over, back to the Darkside.

BA had called for a big scalp before the end of the season. On top of the ladder at their dung heap - it doesn't come better! Plus a bit of silverware.
Down by 6 goals just into the third. But then we held firm. Doc led the group into a magnificent final quarter of 'man on man' accountable football which saw us nearly fritter away the game with behinds until Harry Kerr added 4 to make it 6 for the day and the Bus put us ahead.. Fair dinkum, our coach must be worth an extra pair of legs on the deck. And Brayde Plamer's hands fixed up the best performed ruckman in the competition.
Lots of new faces in the rooms after the game!  Roll on Labrador!

Noel 'Kooka' Emzin who walked into the club in 1971 and who had a total of 179 games (senior plus ressies) by 1987; Filthy Phil Heer  ('87 premiership side) again, and Scott Abercrombie again. Two other blokes, mates of Luke O'Rourke, who had never played the game before: Luke Berner and Jacob Hein.  Throw in O'Reilly, Littlechild, Lancaster, Thompson who doubled up after the Colts and a Squiz who needed the dunny close at hand, plus a couple of 15 year olds from PNG and you have a motely crew to be proud of. Well done all.

Beaten by a better side. Still in contention midway through the third, and we thought maybe their bigger blokes would tire. Nup. Only once could we score successive goals, and you can't bridge the gap if that's the case. Rhino tackle of the year, second quarter in front of opposition box.

Interesting game of footy. We put in a great first quarter but then watched as they put on 7 to zip in the second stanza. Our blokes answered a few questions in the third to make a game of it but in the end the better side prevailed.
Lobba was full of pride after his charges fought it out all the way. Coach's prophetic words on our debut player Smith.

The boys showed they will be up for it when the finals hit in 2 weeks. Lots of class about if they can include those who have played senior footy rhis year. Highlight of the day was the time keeping of Chandler Rolfe's grandfather, a former player for South Melbourne (Sydney for those born post 1985 or so) and who also played alongside Tom Papley's grandfather at Morrabbin
Probably here for Chandler's uncle Paul's 50th.

Apart from one patch in the last stanza we matched the Mounties. That was the best forward structure they could put on the deck and our backs did a magnificent job with tight pressure plus nerve. Thought Roysey's effort on one hip and with one wing was extremely good. Limited Moncur to 4 and was not crunched in the hole. While Matt Spencer was a good traffic cop up the lines.
And the Hawk's goal in the third was a classic small forward play coming in front and centre and roving at pace at the foot of the pack, and disposing accurately and quickly. And from our angle of viewing another of Hawk's kicks for goal appeared to bounce over the line and back into play. Pity, might've been in front at the last break with our tails up. May have been the one that got away.
Blake Erickson may find himself back in Darkside colours next week.
Congrats to our milestone players who all made valuable contributions.

Better game than the score indicates. Luke O'Rourke kicked a fearsome goal after following through at a centre bounce contest, Phil Heer demonstrated how to get off the ground and kicked 2 clever ones, and Taser was in everyting but unfortunately did an ankle late in the day. Ugly incident at half time resulted in red cards to a player from both sides. Best if we can reserve flying the flag during the play.
Filthy Phil Heer buttered up again. Appears he may play the season out. Can only be good as his voice in the rooms and on the ground provided sound advice to all. This week he played alongside a third generation Broadie player Corey Wilson, son of Paul Youngy Wilson who played with Phil way back when, and whose grandfather is Terry Young who was here at the start. Keep going Phil, there is a record in there somewhere.
Many thanks to James Pocotich and Sam Littlechild for doubling up after the Colts game.

An undefeated Mountie side looked anything but invincible against our lads. Mayo spends his week chasing players and negotiating internally to field a competitive side each week and this week he conjured up a team with ten under 17 players and six others who had never played together. Remarkable. But for inaccuracy we would be singing their praises. We should anyway.

Pretty lack lustre game and performance to boot. Pushed off the ball too easily and outpaced. Thought Ryan Dienjes was a high note for the first quarter and Brayde stuck at it all day. After an even first stanza, we just couldn't string any goals together, while Surfers benefitted from a couple of soft decisions - one in red time -  then powered ahead with Green providing a target up from and Ryan Agita winning the ball handsomely around the ground.
Goal of the day was Billy O'Donnell's soccer volley. For the numerologists it was his 2nd for the day and scored at 2.22 in the (2 x 2)th quarter.
Not sure how the new coaches' boxes were but the Officials and Media could do with a couple of Lazy Boys, a fridge, an AC for the summer, floor to ceiling windows and a balcony for those balmy days.
Must mention Nathan Hobley who in Chief Administrator Wayne's absence, managed the sides, organised the recording of the game, and ran the water for the ones.

This game was still there for the taking in the last. Like the seniors though we just couldn't get successive goals on the board.
Story of the day was the comebacks. 'Comeback' 1: Scotty Abercrombie (assistant seniors coach) donned the gear and when his turn came, crossed the white line with a notable fever, fell into a tackle which left the ball contested. We scored a goal, yours Scotty.
'Comeback' 2. Phil Heers, who we understand turns out occasionally for the Townsville Masters competition. Phil looked a classy 55+ type with a Bobby Skilton left boot. He played in the 1987 Broadbeach first ever premiership side and was named in the best.  Interestingly, in '87 he played alongside Tony Owen who kicked 3 for the game including 2 crucial goals in the last quarter. Why is that interesting? Because Tony is the father of Matty Spencer who played alongside Phil in today's game. And Matt's no spring chicken either.
PS If Kingy ever learns to place or just guide the ball to his foot he will kick bags each week.

Outclassed by a bigger better team. Young Smith from the under 17s looks a likely prospect.
Injuries didn't help matters. Jye Melverton looks like he reinjured his knee and was visibily upset at his run of tough luck, particularly after a an impressive pre season. Jock Thompson must've copped one and he looked miserable and vulnerable with the ubiquitious ice bag on the orchestra stalls.

SENIORS ROUND 11

DEBUT: Liam Nelson. Great climb through the ranks from the Colts to Twos to Seniors in one season. Congratulations Liam.
Billy O'Donnell returns for his 2016 debut having played one in 2015 and welcome back Nibbsy.

Billy O'Donnell the story here we're guessing, alongside a youthful line-up. Apparently Mitch Backman also enjoyed the spaces and was his best effort for the season. Reading between the lines, got to hand it to BA and the troops for enthusiam and effort.

From Lobba: "It has been a challenging few weeks for the club with the injury list and a few blokes pursuing other interests, but credit to the guys who have dug deep for the club and their team mates. The colts and young men of the club are continually demanding respect with the way they go about their footy and their attitude towards the club. All credit to them as it is them setting the foundations for the future. On the road this week up to the wide open spaces of Sandgate which will require the same work rate of the under-manned side of last week."
Worth the road trip just to watch Fults if indeed he plays.  Luke Dempsey-Che and Mitch Kavic back from the Hollywood Hills.

Fults turned it on in the final stanza when the old bloke should have been in bed. Finished with 4 goals 6 behinds! Good to see Taser back with a vengance and Brad O'Reilly continues his eye-catching form. Pricey has made a habit of heading up the 'best' list lately, and The Bus is the best skipper in the comp!

No contest it appears? We weren't there and as always there are performances of note. Bit by bit reports leak through and the best of them concerned young Joel Platell, just returned from U/17 duties, took on one of the QAFL's most seasoned and better performed full forwards in Kent Abbey. He held him to one - no mean feat particularly on the Panther's home deck. Also Sharpie's name in the 'best' sticks out like Lobba on the bench. Promoted on the quality of his first appearance for the club in the Ressies last week, he puts in a back-to-back with the Ones.

SATURDAY 11 June:FIGHT LIKE A GIRL

A feast of footy at Ord Minnett. Six games for real afficiandos. In order on the day: the Colts, Reserves, Seniors, Under 8s (we think the swans colours won), BWFC and Old Boys. We won five, with the BWFC recording their second win, but lost the last with Luke Presley and Fults letting the Old Boys side down.
And there was something for everyone in those results. The Colts eventually greeted the judges comfortably, the Magoos held on by a bare margin, and the Seniors sort of romped it in.
Good size crowd in attendance with the usual suspects; Peter Harris; past players from all eras; the IOC; the ladies and entourage; junior parents and the kids; plus the Old Boys.  The Ladies did well, building to a crescendo mid seniors game. A function of sherbets consumed?
Should also note that Connor Nutting was named in the Qld Under 17 best in their victory oveer Tasmania.

ROUND 9
2pm Broadbeach v Qld Uni at Ord Minnett

INs: Palmer, Dineen, Upton OUTs: Nutting (state U/17s), Platell (state U/17s) Brennan (S'port)
We wish all the best to the two lads off to Tassie to represent the state at U/17 level (pack your gloves), and to Kizza back to the NEAFL. Brayde back; Issac Dineen comes in to play his second for the year and career 4th; and Nicky Upton returns after injury

While those on the boundary battled the midgees, the blokes on the deck had a day out, knocking up 200 plus with a remarkable goal kicking efficiency of 81%. Talk turned to record scores. As far as we can determine (although Howie recollects there were a few big scores and margins in the 2004-6 era when we flogged Redland, Western Magpies and Labrador) it was our biggest score and margin since the '96 Triple Premiership year when on August 11 we piled on 40 goals  23 behinds to Robina's 4 goals 2 behinds. In '96 BA was skipper, yesterday BA was coach. In yesterday's game we had 16 majors at the long break while back in the day we had 16 at quarter time! Coincidentally in both games we featured 13 goal kickers. In '96 Felici topped the list with 10, while yesterday Harry Kerr and Nick Upton picked up 7 each, including 4 goal quarters (Harry in the first and Nick in the second).
Great effort with no real passengers. And no letting up. Usually a side well down comes out after half time or the last break and applies the brakes, but our lads kept it up all day. Should also observe that we had the better of the adjudicators - could've been those battery charged jumpers.
Some great goals, particularly by skipper Quickie who relished running off the half back line to kick in-play goals from difficult angles; a prodigious goal from Fulton's flank from the boot of Ryan Dienjes; strong lead-up  goals from Harry; goals from marking contests by Nicky;  and opportunistic goals from Nick and Big Brayde. One of Nicky's resulting from a Brayde pack smother, a blind turn and pass forward. Not forgetting Strongy's 3 when shifted from defence nor Dylan Lancaster's polished triad. And Squiz would be upset if we missed on his overhead mark and goal in the last stanza.
But we have to sing the praises of the back line nucleus. Joel Daffy is a hard, tough, very skillful and smart player who has complemented the poise of the Dienjes brothers, the flair of Quickie and the attack of Micah. And mention should be made of the  innovative use of Micah, Ryan Dienjes, Searly, the Hawk, Squiz and Matt Spencer in the middle who dominated the clearances all the long day (the stretcher interruption plus all those goals added around 33 mins of time-on).  You missed a good one coach Scottie.

11.30am Broadbeach v Qld Uni at Ord Minnett

Debuts: Brad O'Reilly, Jason Sharp
Boys are back after the bye following a couple of tough weeks but hopefully better and stronger for the experience. We welcome back some blokes off long term injury in Tim Brewer and Nelson Pollard so we wish them well. New to the reserves is Colt Brad O'Reilly who has been in some good form and has a great attitude towards his footy. Jacob McCormick also gets his call up after strong performances and leadership with the colts. Jason Sharp also debuts for the club after joining the club just under a month ago, hailing from the North Ringwood Saints.
McCaulay withdrew (illness) and Wallace from the Colts stepped up.

This one had us very nervous on the siren. If Lobba smoked it would havve been a carton last quarter. The scoreboard had been incorrect at all breaks in the game and we anxiously awaited the goal umpires 'all clear' to the 5 point victory. Not that it should have been that close. While it was a brisk opening quarter, and a subdued arm wrestle until three quarter time, in the final stanza we squandered a sizeable number of scoring shots. At one stage we were hoping for a three kick lead through amassing behinds such was our inaccuracy. And we made it!
Luke O'Rourke was outstanding at full forward, at the school end in particular, with one super impressive goal from a Price pass in the third. And he capitalised in the last by moving into the centre half forward space. Big contributions from Colts players O'Reilly and McCormick was heartening, while debut Victorian Sharpie, stood out with his winter white and great disposal by foot and hand. You missed a close one coach Scottie.

Good game that held the interest with neither side consolidating on periods of good footy. Our 10th goal by Mizzi, and a cracker of a shot from wide and well out, shut the gate on the students. Rayner is developing into a contender for higher honours and Mayo junior turned it on.  You didn't miss this Scotty - you're never there this early.

The blokes were somewhat erratic but this was the performance of the season so far. A stranggled first stanza followed by alternate domination in the second and third quarters, and game on!  Maybe those 7 behinds in the first hurt us or lack of some polish.
And an adjudicator of integrity might wince at the match review coming up. The Daffy mark decision in the 4th cost us and a decision reversal on Sqiz also didn't help.
Great to see young blokes putting Broadie first. Let's hope we can retain the likes of Nutting, Fitzsimmons, Platell, O'Shea and Lancaster (whose age total is less than Ray Johnson's) Nutting's time in the Twos appears to have matured his game and he covered lots of ground. And the transfer between O'Shea and Lancaster in the third that resulted in a 'poster' was a sight we hope to see more of (the ball transfer, not the inaccuracy).
How often does Josh Searl kick our first goal?  How long can Matt Spencer keep putting the fear up his opponents?
Stuff the loss, but walk tall blokes.

Not the greatest game by the boys today. Consistently outplayed by the grumpy Tigers. Pleasing to see two of the Colts in Nelson and McCormick put their hands up for a double dip.
And Scotty's grab in the last, (finished off with a goal), was something we haven't seen for a while.

Very impressive winning goal by Chandler Rolfe in the last, kicking from the boundary, 50 out and into the breeze.  Squiz acknowledges Chandler's superior kicking skills but will not give in to the speculation on the more handsome visage.

We were Palmy's detritus on the day. 'Nuff said. Very little to write home about. Jesse Derrick and his team mates just too good, although some accuracy on our part in front of the vertical erections may have made it look a little better.
Micah scored his first goal. Scotty's new look frightened us - he looked like a mini bald Fevalenko.
We had our own Ryan's War early on when probably our hardest one at the contest, Ryan Pantic went down in obvious difficulty. Appears to be a knee and one of those crucial ligaments. Joined his brother in hospital.

Disappointing. We started with the first goal then conceded 9 and it was catch-up footy for the rest of the day. While we did outscore 'em in the last 3 quarters on the back of Ryan Dienjes going forward to kick 4, it was never going to be a Western Maggie finish. They had our measure.
Didn't help matters when Shae Killey was off in the first play with a hammy and Josh Searl looked liked he copped one in the gonads, and went down early on, but no excuses. They beat us to the ball. McIvor-Clark had it on a string and Brittain is classy.
Highlights for us were provided by two youngsters. Micah when he laid a great bone jarring hit on Mcrae in the second stanza, and Dylan Lancaster's second quarter goal off the boundary line. Micah went through as they say, like a Bondi tram, did not break stride and Dylan's was a fair dinkum kick at goal without daylight.
Time to lick our wounds, then relaunch.

OUTS:  King (seniors), Scott (seniors), Rogers (Suns), Pecotich (Suns), Tiffin (inj), Macaulay, Turner INS: J. Pantic, McDaid, Price, Daffy, Ward, Leary, O'Keefe
Big game this week on the road to the Gorillas, we've lost a couple of players to Suns NEAFL in James Pecotich who has had a sparkling month in the ruck, while Seb Rogers has also earned a call. Returning from injury are Price and Daffy who are very welcome additions and should fit nicely into the group.

All square at the long break then Broadie added 9 goals to 1 in the second half. All over red rover. Pleasing display by Joel Daffy in his first for the season - he lays a mean tackle for a bloke his size, and a good return to the deck for Price after an injury in Round 1.
Thought Spencer was instrumental in the third, and while he kicked woefully, Connor Mullins is getting back to the form that had him in the Ones in 2015. Moschie's grasscutters had the ball lace out to receivers.
Back in the finals frame blokes.

Entertaining game with the ladies having a great third stanza to outscore Burleigh 4 goals to 1 and set us up for crack. Prior to half time it had been hard work, and our side were frustrated with umpiring that awarded us one free only but several goals to Burleigh.
Big mark and captain's goal to Holly Mirfiled in the second while goal machine  Rahana  Lotter kicked one that woud've satisfied Daicos. Holly also dominated the stoppages with great ruckwork and could press for selection at the Reserves table.

An appropriate first goal to Josh Searl.
A steady as she goes win after a remarkably accurate scoreboard in the first half. Harry Kerr had 5 at the long break, and kicked 'em from all around and in and out. Bryce's footwork a delight and Quickie was like a Stawell Gift runner our of the back half. Big Brayde in rare form. Thought the field kicking generally was as good as it's been for a while. Some prodigious and aggresively placed hits.
And Mayo looked good in pink.

It is appropriate on the 400th anniversary of the Bard's death to sum this one up as "All's well that ends well"
First half was lamentable. Blokes appeared lazy, opposition running in numbers at the ball then spreading. Unattended players all over the place. The most interesting aspect was that two number 55s (Strongy and Goodall) opposed each other! What are the odds on that?
At the long break we were lucky to still be in it - thanks to Western Maggies inaccuracy. A 1960s spray from BA, which left no player in doubt as to their contribution thus far, worked wonders. Royesy showed great leadership in the third stanza and Dylan Lancaster started to pick up on the pace of the game. We edged 'em on the scoreboard and found ourselves within range (4 goals) at three quarter time. A wonderful last quarter, with some critical plays, (1. Dylan Lancaster's cool head pass under pressure, backed by Nibbsy's voice, to Kerry for a goal; 2. Brayde Palmers's playbusting long handball to Moschie for a goal; and 3. Nibbsy ignoring the snap and taking the option to Searly for his second of the game [he put our first on the board]), resulted in a seven goal final quarter with the Hawk contributing 3, and the Cats getting up by 8 points in red time. We got out of gaol! Will Shakespeare might've said, "Much Ado About Nothing"  Dave Moran's blood-sugar soared!

With the inclusion of O'Shea, Mitchell and Melverton, an already youthful side took the field. (Thanks also to Jake McCormick and Jock Thompson from the Colts for their contributions as runner and water carrier). Lobby deserved his victory after some close ones - it's not easy to manage a vastly changing squad week to week. Anyone's game at half time, Seb Rogers was sent to a key forward post and promptly delivered with 2. While we thought it might be the youthful legs that get us home - take a bow James Pecotich - it was the likes of older and uglier heads in Squiz, Scotty, Pants J and Connor Mullins who picked up the clutch goals. Squiz is still a good bet at set shots.

The final scores flattered us given the Mountie inaccuracy. In the first half we were aggrresive and direct with clean hands and sure feet and closed down the Mountie offence. And with a well functioning back half on top we had a slight edge at the long break. Seems we lost our way chipping wide while the Mounties stuck it to us. They won the stoppages, spread well and ran hard. Throw in aerial dominance and it was all over red rover. Burton did not appear after half time which didn't help our cause (he delayed a rotation change to hit the pack hard only to sustain a head injury). Some big hits in this game and there will be some sore bodies looking for recovery this week. Our old man Matt Dillion laid the best legal and bone crunching hit we've seen in QAFL footy. Bryce's white boots stood out.

Kurt Cole led the team in Mitch Kennedy's injury enforced absence (1 week only we hope). We led at the long break due to Kingy being in fine fettle, Connor Mullins season first game, Dale Madden and Moschie all pushing for a call up. Moschie pulled up a particularly stylish 6 points after a double side step and a pirouette that would embarass Margot Fonteyn. Unforunately Dale did the knee from the looks of it and will be confined to moot court appearances for a while, and Taser was pretty much out of it after a good'un. Speaking of good'uns, we fear for the life of Matt Spencer's targets especially in his comeback games.

Difficult when you have only 17 players and the opposition have 21. Unable to rotate or relieve injured players, the lads were beaten by the numbers. But not before Lancaster made the ball talk between goal square and goal line;  Jack OShea put on a withering burst and finished a la Daicos; Sam Bensley ran down three opponents and Liam Nelson laid the tackle of the season to date.

Very entertaining game with the ball, for the most part, moving at a furious pace, and all players having a RHG. We started slowly and didn’t get on the board until the 17 min mark and Dienjes of the Darcy variety snaffled one with 10 sec to go. Darcy and Benji had good days against their former club. Twelve of our 14 goals came post the first break. The third stanza established our bona fides with first use of the ball, and good spread up and around the ground aided by the backs all exposing Surfers with pace off their opponents. Quickie pounded the paddock, to the point where he was benched 3 times - took courage to resume duties at both ends of the deck. Nick Burton picked up three, one on the end of a wonderful transition play involving cap Quick, Killey, Pants and Backman. And Harry Kerr won the dividend of constant representation to also bag 3. The win gave promise of more to come. And the players have our admiration keeping up the pace and the appetite for contests in the conditions.
We appreciate that players are given jobs and nominating best players can be a subjective process, and we have never made a dissenting call, but I will bare my bum in Bourke St next time in Melb if Pants doesn't get the nod from the umpires as BOG

Boys were a bit stiff and it could've gone either way. Debut player Lance Hudson from the Qld U/18s unfortunately strained a hammy with the first kick of the game. PRE SEASON
SAT MARCH 19: INTRA CLUB GAME
While the Taylors were fighting out Division 10 honours, our Senior plus Colt list was busy doing battle on a spongy deck in very hot conditions at Robina. We know nothing of the selection criteria but assume it was some variation of Probables (Cats jumpers) v Possibles (Lime Green outfits)

Observations: The Limeys had 'em on the run more than once in the first half; In general we had underestimated our depth; Shae Killey is a very good footballer when he uses both head and legs coincidentally (we need to crowd fund to buy him out of his planned departure mid season); Benji Neal, formerly of Surfers, latterly of Melbourne somewhere, and now from deep in the arc, knows where the vertical erections are;
Roysey is a better player than he is a water boy; good to see Nick Scott back on the deck after surgery and Rhino Dienjes have a half;  great to see Taser back from the darkside; and our height may be youthful but it is tall; Quickie on 100+ games and celebrating his 20th season at the CATTERY led from the back half. The game gave the selectors somethings to ponder.

PRE SEASON ALPHA SPORTS CUP

Round 2: A triple loss but good signs and reason for optimism for all three sides.
Labrador v Broadbeach (Cooke-Murphy Oval)

Colts: Labrador
9  7  61  def Broady  4  7  31
Goals:
2 O'Shea, 1 Zimmer 1 Littlechild
Best:
Luke Reynolds, Zimmer, O'Shea, McCormick, Brand, Madeley
Broady lined up with 19 while the Tiges had numbers to rotate. That capacity made a big difference given the hot conditions. There was a good nucleus on show, and we are advised, another 10 or so players already registered to bolster those who apart from from patches of play, pretty well matched Labrador.
Coach Mayo was pretty happy the way the boys ran out the game.

Magoos: Labrador 11  8  74 def Broady  7  8   50
Goals: 2 Krzyska 2 O'Rourke, 1 O'Donnell, 1 Mullins, 1 Kavic
Best: Throw up Mullins, Cole, Daffy, Kennedy, the goalkickers, Mitchell and Dineen
Pretty good hit out for the Magoos and brilliantly goal umpired. Good to see Matt Dillion and Joel Daffy have a run.

Seniors: Labrador 11  8   74 def Broady 5  11  41
Goals:
2 Nutting, 1 Klessens, 1 Mitchell, 1 Kerr
Best:
Dienjes D, Killey, Fitzsimmons, Rolfe, Melverton, Pantic R, Tomlinson
A few young'uns on the park with Connor Nutting at 16 and a clutch of 17 year olds (Pecotich, Melverton, Fitzsimmons) And 2015 Colt, Dylan Lancaster, showed some form at times.
And the porn star, Lincoln Stollery, was given license to run. At his pace, a run and a kick is an 80 m clearance or lace-up hit. And when his ball handling gets there, he could be a very valuable footballer.
General field decision making, delivery, and set ups/positioning might be a focus over the next few weeks.
Nicky Upton was back taking freak marks and mouthing off at the umpies. Lad from Tassie, Josh Nibbs, has a head as hard as a Tassie Tiger and quite prepared to get it over the ball inside.
Missing a Haley at this stage, and a crumbing forward slot is wide open. Few walk-ups rested including Palmer, Royes, Dienjes R,

Round 1
Broady 11 6  72 def Surfers  9  10  64
Goals: 3 Melverton, 1 each to Pantic J, Nutting, Rolfe, Kavic, Klessens, Neal, Kerr and Mullins
Best: Take yer pick. We rotated around 28 players. Over the game, we thought the youngsters were impressive: Notting, Pecotich, Melverton, Price, Neal, Fitzsimmons, Dienjes D and Kerr. Plus the usual suspects.
Not a great game but to plagiarise Germaine Greer 'Nothing beats a great win, but any win beats no win at all!'
Kicking effectiveness well down and will improve, as will taking coaching instructions on board. The trend of an increase in tackling intensity post the long break continues?
Yet to take the deck: Scott, Searl, Royes, Clarke, Dienjes R, Upton, Daffy, Pollard, Kennedy, Mosche-Thomas and two or three masked men who will be unleashed when the dinkum stuff starts.
