Mitch Backman

Mitch has form. BOG form in the U/18s Grand Final for Bentleigh in the Southern Football League, where he had played since his U/9 days.

In 2012 he transferred to East Brighton to play Div 1 senior footy where he played some 60 games, winning and losing one flag. He was described in 2013 as "an up and coming star"; and his last home and away game 2015 is described on the League website thus "On an afternoon where hotly-contested footy, turnovers and plenty of stoppages were the order of the day, Backman stood out with his precise ball use. He hit up teammates by hand and foot time and again off half back, and looked to take the game on and move the ball quickly at every opportunity. Played in several positions throughout the year, Backman seems to have found his niche as a backman, providing drive out of defence with his poise under pressure."

Mitch arrived on the coast to take advantage of our beautiful one day, perfect the next weather. Ex Colts coach Craig Sinclair came to the party and provided Mitch with a position behind the cistern at the Plumbing Coop Supply and now he can indulge his passion which is a healthy lifestyle, septic tanks and footy. And maybe a soul mate of the female variety.

Pre season at Broady Mitch belied his name and returned to the midfield/on ball role and was prominent in conditions that he had not experienced before. He is a skillful ball handler, can hit a target lace up, and has pace to burn as he covers ground looking for space or a team mate. His ground coverage is also impressive as he pops up to feature a couple of times in transitioning the ball. We are reminded of Merv Williams on TV Ringside who would often describe a boxer's performance as "hitting his opponent everywhere but the soles of his feet and the roof of his mouth." Has been a more than valuable contributor in the opening rounds of the season.

By-the-by Mitch has a background as an amateur boxer at around the 75kg mark and trained at Steve Kerr's boxing club under the tutelage of Ken Whiffen, former trainer at the Saints who relayed Jeansy's messages to players in '66 when they won the flag. Could be a good man in the clinches. For a bloke who is scared of needles, he comes decorated with a fair spread of signifant tatts but claims no bloopers. Gargles with Tarzan's Grip before games.
